“The incense which you shall make, according to its composition you shall not make for yourselves: it shall be to you holy for Yahweh.”
What does Exodus 30:37 mean?
In ancient Israel's worship, the priests mixed a special incense blend following God's exact recipe, and this particular formula was reserved only for the altar in the tabernacle. God commanded that people not recreate this sacred incense for personal use, keeping it holy and set apart for encounter with him alone. This rule reflects a deeper principle about what makes something sacred: it's not just the materials themselves, but the intentionality and reverence behind them. When something is designated as holy to God, treating it as common or copying it for ourselves dims that sense of the sacred and our awareness that some things belong to him. For us today, this might mean recognizing that certain practices and spaces in our spiritual lives are meant to draw us toward God specifically, not to be trivialized or made into something we control.
