“God said moreover to Moses, “You shall tell the children of Israel this, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and this is my memorial to all generations.”
What does Exodus 3:15 mean?
When Moses asked God's name at the burning bush, God revealed himself as Yahweh, the God who had walked with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob through their entire lives. By connecting his identity to these ancestors, God was saying, "I'm not a distant deity, but the one who has been faithfully present through generations of your family." The name Yahweh itself points to God's eternal existence and constant presence, the one who always is and always will be. God told Moses to use this name when speaking to the Israelites because they needed to know that the God their great-grandparents trusted was the same God calling them now toward freedom. Even today, this passage reminds us that God isn't starting fresh with each generation, but rather invites us into a story of faithfulness that stretches far beyond our own moment, connecting us to something ancient and unshakeable.
