Exodus 28:35
“It shall be on Aaron to minister: and its sound shall be heard when he goes in to the holy place before Yahweh, and when he comes out, that he not die.”
What does Exodus 28:35 mean?
Aaron, as the high priest, wore a special robe with bells attached to the hem. These bells would jingle as he moved, and their sound served a practical and spiritual purpose: they announced his presence to God and to the people. The idea was that if the sound stopped—if Aaron went silent—something had gone terribly wrong, and he might have died in God's holy presence due to sin or ritual impurity. This reflects the ancient Israelite understanding that approaching God directly was an incredibly serious matter, not something to be done casually or with a divided heart. The bells were both a safeguard and a reminder that holiness demands our full attention and respect. For us today, while we don't wear bells or have the same temple restrictions, the principle still speaks: when we draw near to God, we do so with reverence, knowing that our relationship with him matters deeply and requires our genuine commitment.
