Exodus 24:2
“Moses alone shall come near to Yahweh, but they shall not come near. The people shall not go up with him.””
What does Exodus 24:2 mean?
Moses is being set apart here to enter God's presence on Mount Sinai, while the Israelites remain at the base of the mountain. This wasn't about Moses being spiritually superior, but rather God establishing a specific role for him as the mediator between himself and the people, which was necessary during this formative moment in Israel's history. The restriction placed on the people reflected the reality that direct encounters with God's holiness required preparation and could be overwhelming or even dangerous without proper boundaries. By designating Moses as the sole intermediary, God was establishing both protection for the community and a clear line of communication, making Moses the one responsible for receiving God's instructions and then sharing them with others.
