“I will not drive them out from before you in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the animals of the field multiply against you.”
What does Exodus 23:29 mean?
God is explaining to Israel that he won't instantly remove all the people already living in Canaan, even though he promised the land to them. If he cleared everyone out immediately, the territory would go wild and untended, allowing dangerous animals to multiply and overrun it, which would actually make it harder for Israel to settle and thrive. This reflects a practical wisdom about change: sometimes rapid, total upheaval creates more problems than gradual transition. God is saying he'll drive out the current inhabitants, but at a pace that lets Israel actually occupy and manage the land they're inheriting. It's a reminder that God's plans often unfold with our real limitations in mind, not despite them.
