What does Exodus 21:25 mean?
This verse describes the principle of proportional justice, sometimes called "an eye for an eye." It appeared in ancient legal codes as a way to ensure that punishment wouldn't exceed the harm done, which actually protected people from excessive revenge. The idea was that if someone burned you, they couldn't be executed for it, only held accountable to an equivalent degree. For many of us today, this raises questions about justice and forgiveness. While we don't apply these rules literally anymore, the principle still echoes: fairness means the response should match the offense. At the same time, this passage sits alongside many biblical calls to mercy and forgiveness, reminding us that God offers us something beyond what we deserve, which invites us to extend the same grace to others.
