What does Exodus 21:24 mean?
This ancient law established limits on revenge when someone was injured, which was actually a significant protection for the vulnerable in that time. Rather than allowing unlimited retaliation (where a small injury might trigger a death sentence), it capped punishment at proportional harm, preventing cycles of escalating violence. The principle reflects that justice should be measured and fair, not excessive. Many centuries later, Jesus would build on this by calling his followers toward something even deeper: forgiveness and reconciliation rather than demanding what we're legally owed.
