Exodus 20:2
““I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.”
What does Exodus 20:2 mean?
God opens the Ten Commandments by reminding the Israelites of who he is and what he has already done for them. He's not introducing himself as a distant authority figure, but as the one who personally liberated them from slavery, and he's grounding everything that follows in that relationship of rescue and care. This context matters: the commands that come next aren't arbitrary rules from on high, but guidelines for a people already loved and freed. It's the difference between serving someone out of fear and serving someone because they've proven they're on your side.
