“They said to Moses, “Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don’t let God speak with us, lest we die.””
What does Exodus 20:19 mean?
The Israelites had just witnessed God descend on Mount Sinai with thunder, lightning, and a thick cloud, which terrified them. They're asking Moses to be their intermediary, to receive God's words and pass them along rather than hearing God's voice directly themselves. Their fear wasn't unreasonable, given how overwhelming God's presence felt in that moment. This reveals something true about encountering the holy: we often need help processing it. Moses became a bridge between the people and God, which is why he's remembered as such a crucial figure in Israel's story. The request also shows that God respected their limits and eventually established the priesthood as a way for people to approach him safely through trained mediators. Even when we're afraid or overwhelmed by something greater than ourselves, there are ways to draw close without being destroyed by the encounter.
