Exodus 19:13
“No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether it is animal or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, they shall come up to the mountain.””
What does Exodus 19:13 mean?
God is describing the holy boundary around Mount Sinai while he prepares to give the Ten Commandments. The mountain itself is so sacred during this moment that anyone or anything crossing the barrier, even accidentally, will be executed immediately. This isn't about cruelty but about signaling how serious and untouchable God's presence is, preparing Israel to understand that approaching him requires reverence and preparation. The command shows an ancient Near Eastern understanding of sacred space: some places are so set apart for God's purposes that casual or presumptuous entry is dangerous. When the long trumpet blast finally sounds, the people can come up, but only after proper consecration.
