Exodus 17:5
“Yahweh said to Moses, “Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.”
What does Exodus 17:5 mean?
When God tells Moses to take his rod and walk ahead with the elders, he's about to do something extraordinary, but notice he doesn't do it alone. Moses is instructed to bring the respected leaders of Israel with him, which means they'll witness God's power directly and can later reassure the people about what they saw. The rod represents God's authority working through Moses, the same rod that had already brought plagues on Egypt, and now it will bring water from a rock in the wilderness. By having Moses lead publicly with witnesses, God is building trust and faith in both the immediate moment and the community's memory of what God can do.
