What does Exodus 15:3 mean?

This verse comes right after the Israelites have just witnessed God part the Red Sea and destroy Pharaoh's army, so they're declaring who God has revealed himself to be through that deliverance. When it calls God "a man of war," it's saying that God fights for his people, that he has the power and willingness to stand against their enemies and protect them. The repetition of "Yahweh is his name" emphasizes that this warrior quality is central to God's character and identity, not just something he does occasionally. For people facing overwhelming circumstances, this speaks to a God who isn't distant or passive, but one who actively moves to defend those who trust him.
