Exodus 14:17
“Behold, I myself will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them: and I will get myself honor over Pharaoh, and over all his armies, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”
What does Exodus 14:17 mean?
God is declaring that he will strengthen the Egyptians' determination to chase the Israelites into the sea, even though this pursuit will end in their destruction. By allowing this to happen, God will display his power and establish his authority over Egypt's greatest strengths: its ruler, its military forces, and its advanced chariots and cavalry. What makes this verse challenging is the phrase about hardening hearts. Throughout Exodus, we see this pattern repeated, and it raises real questions about human choice and divine will. Many scholars understand this as God confirming what Pharaoh was already choosing to do (he'd already shown a hardened heart many times), rather than God forcing him against his will. Either way, the deeper point is that God's purposes will be accomplished, and his character will be revealed as trustworthy and supreme, no matter how powerful human opposition appears to be.
