What does Exodus 13:18 mean?
When the Israelites left Egypt after generations of slavery, God didn't lead them straight into the land he'd promised. Instead, he guided them through the wilderness toward the Red Sea, a longer and harder route. The reason matters: the direct path would have taken them through enemy territory where they would have faced immediate military conflict, and a newly freed people—traumatized and unprepared—likely would have turned back in fear. God's choice to lead them the long way shows something tender about how he works with us. He takes into account not just where we need to go, but who we are at this moment and what we're actually ready for. Sometimes the indirect path, the one that feels slower or more difficult, is actually the one that gets us where we're meant to be. The mention of them going out "armed" suggests they left with readiness and some sense of order, even if their faith was still being built along the way.
