What does Exodus 13:17 mean?
After the plagues forced Pharaoh to release the Israelites, God deliberately chose a longer, harder route through the wilderness instead of the direct coastal path toward Canaan. The shorter way would have meant immediate military conflict with the Philistines, and God understood something crucial about the people's faith at that fragile moment: they were still emotionally attached to Egypt and hadn't yet developed the trust needed to fight for their freedom. Sometimes the longer road, even the one filled with uncertainty and hardship, is actually God's kindness because it gives us space to grow and believe before we face our biggest challenges. This reminds us that when life takes an unexpected detour, it might not be punishment, but rather God's wisdom about what we're ready for right now.
