Exodus 12:9
“Don’t eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire; with its head, its legs and its inner parts.”
What does Exodus 12:9 mean?
God was giving the Israelites specific instructions for preparing the Passover lamb, the meal they'd eat before leaving Egypt. The roasting method (rather than boiling or eating it raw) served practical purposes: it would cook the meat thoroughly while keeping it together as one complete animal, reinforcing that this was a unified family meal, not just individual portions. There's also spiritual significance here. Fire was often associated with God's presence and purification in Scripture, so the roasting method connected their meal to divine protection and holiness. The instruction to eat it completely, head to feet, emphasized that nothing should be wasted and that they should consume this act of salvation fully, not half-heartedly. For the Israelites standing on the edge of freedom, these careful details transformed an ordinary meal into a sacred remembrance of God's deliverance.
