“They shall eat the meat in that night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread. They shall eat it with bitter herbs.”
What does Exodus 12:8 mean?
When God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, He asked them to remember that night by eating a simple meal: roasted meat, bread made without yeast, and bitter herbs. The unleavened bread represented the hurry of their escape (there was no time for bread to rise), while the bitter herbs tasted like the bitterness of their years in bondage. Together, these foods told the story of both suffering and deliverance, making the Passover meal a way to taste their history and gratitude all at once. Even today, people who observe Passover eat this same meal to reconnect with their ancestors' experience and God's faithfulness in bringing them to freedom.
