“Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he didn’t let the children of Israel go out of his land.”
What does Exodus 11:10 mean?
Even after witnessing extraordinary miracles, Pharaoh refused to release the Israelites. The text tells us that God hardened Pharaoh's heart, which is one of the Bible's most difficult ideas to sit with, since it seems to suggest God removed Pharaoh's freedom to choose. Many scholars understand this differently: Pharaoh's heart was already resistant and stubborn, and God allowed him to remain locked in that stubbornness rather than breaking his will. Whether we read it as God actively hardening or permitting hardness, the point is clear: sometimes people witness undeniable evidence of God's power and still say no. That's both a warning about the human capacity for resistance and a reminder that choosing God requires more than just seeing miracles, it requires openness in our hearts.
