What does Exodus 10:8 mean?
Pharaoh is beginning to crack under the weight of the plagues, but he's still trying to negotiate from a position of control. He's willing to let the people go worship their God, but he wants to know exactly who that includes, perhaps hoping to keep some of them as leverage or hostages. It's a half-hearted concession wrapped in a question designed to limit what he has to grant. This moment captures something painfully familiar: the resistance we sometimes offer to what we know we should do. Pharaoh acknowledges the request but immediately tries to water it down, as if partial obedience might spare him from full consequences. Moses and Aaron have asked for the entire community to go, but Pharaoh is already calculating how much he can take back. His question reveals that even when we're ready to give ground, we often try to keep one foot planted in our old position.
