Esther 4:16
““Go, gather together all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day. I and my maidens will also fast the same way. Then I will go in to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish.””
What does Esther 4:16 mean?
Esther is facing an impossible situation: the king has signed a decree to destroy all Jewish people in his kingdom, and approaching him without being summoned could cost her her life. In this moment, she asks her cousin Mordecai to gather the Jewish community for urgent prayer and fasting, while she and her attendants do the same. Her words "if I perish, I perish" aren't despair but quiet courage, a decision to risk everything for the sake of her people rather than stay silent and safe. It's a beautiful picture of someone choosing what's right over what's comfortable, and of a community standing together in prayer during their darkest hour.
