What does Esther 1:22 mean?
King Ahasuerus issued a decree across his entire empire declaring that men should be the heads of their households and that official communications would be delivered in each region's native language. This was partly practical (ensuring people understood the laws) and partly about reinforcing the social order after the queen had publicly disobeyed the king in the previous chapter. The emphasis on "their own language" shows the vast, multicultural reach of the Persian empire, where dozens of languages and peoples fell under one ruler.
