What does Ephesians 6:14 mean?
Paul uses the image of a Roman soldier's armor to help us understand spiritual protection. The "belt of truth" comes first because truth is foundational, the thing that holds everything else together, just as a soldier's belt held their equipment in place. When we know and live by what's true, especially God's truth, we have a foundation that steadies us when life gets confusing or we're tempted to compromise. The "breastplate of righteousness" protects the heart, the center of who we are. Living with integrity, making choices aligned with what we know is right, actually guards us from the shame and inner fracture that comes from acting against our conscience. Together, these aren't about being perfect, but about anchoring ourselves in what we know to be true and letting that guide how we live, so we're not left vulnerable to despair or deception.
