Ephesians 5:4
“nor filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not appropriate; but rather giving of thanks.”
What does Ephesians 5:4 mean?
Paul is inviting us to notice what kind of talk fills our days and shapes our relationships. Filthiness and foolish chatter might seem harmless in the moment, but they gradually wear grooves in how we think and speak, pulling us away from what matters. Instead of letting our words drift toward crude humor or empty talk, he's suggesting we redirect that same energy toward gratitude, which actually does something real: it reorients our hearts toward what's good and true. When we practice thanksgiving, we're not being joyless or stiff. We're choosing words that build people up and remind us (and others) of the ground we're standing on.
