Ecclesiastes 9:11
“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.”
What does Ecclesiastes 9:11 mean?
The Teacher in Ecclesiastes is pointing out something we all eventually notice: hard work and talent alone don't guarantee success. The fastest runners don't always win the race, the strongest don't always win battles, and intelligence doesn't automatically bring wealth or favor. What he's really saying is that life includes elements beyond our control, and that's worth acknowledging honestly. Time passes for everyone equally, and chance (or what we might call circumstance or luck) touches all our lives, regardless of how capable we are. This isn't meant to discourage effort, but rather to free us from the burden of thinking that everything depends entirely on us, and to help us hold our achievements and struggles with a little humility. Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't, and that's part of being human in a world we can't fully control.
