What does Ecclesiastes 9:10 mean?
The writer of Ecclesiastes is reminding us that life is finite, and that reality should shape how we live right now. The point isn't morbid, but liberating: since we won't be working or planning or learning after this life ends, we might as well bring our full energy and care to whatever we're doing today, whether that's our job, a creative project, caring for someone we love, or serving our community. This ancient wisdom cuts through the tendency to delay, to half-commit, or to wait for some perfect future moment. It invites us to ask ourselves: am I bringing my whole self to what's in front of me? The underlying message is that our time and effort matter precisely because they're limited, and because they're invested in the people and purposes we encounter while we're here.
