What does Ecclesiastes 8:13 mean?
There's a deep truth here about how our choices shape our lives. The writer of Ecclesiastes is saying that when people live without regard for God, their lives don't flourish the way they might hope, and no amount of time will change that. It's not primarily about punishment from above, but about the natural consequence of building a life on a foundation that can't support it. The image of days lengthening "like a shadow" is poignant: a shadow stretches out long in the evening light, but it's insubstantial and disappears when darkness comes. Without the anchor of fearing God (which in wisdom literature means respecting His way and living accordingly), even a long life can feel empty.
