Ecclesiastes 8:12
“Though a sinner commits crimes a hundred times, and lives long, yet surely I know that it will be better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.”
What does Ecclesiastes 8:12 mean?
The writer of Ecclesiastes is wrestling with something that troubles many of us: why do people who do wrong sometimes seem to get away with it, living long comfortable lives while good people suffer? His answer isn't to deny what we see, but to point toward a deeper truth. He's saying that even if the wicked appear successful on the surface, there's something fundamentally better about a life lived in reverence toward God, trusting that God sees and cares about justice even when we don't. This isn't a promise that bad people will be struck down tomorrow or that good people won't face hard times. Rather, it's an affirmation that a life oriented toward God, marked by respect for his ways and values, contains something the wicked life never will, regardless of outward circumstances. It's an invitation to trust that what matters most isn't visible on the scoreboard of worldly success.
