What does Ecclesiastes 7:2 mean?
When we're hurting or grieving, we might naturally want to escape into celebration and distraction instead. But the writer of Ecclesiastes suggests that sitting with sorrow, whether our own or someone else's, teaches us something essential that parties cannot: it reminds us that life is finite and precious. Grief has a way of clearing away shallow concerns and bringing us face to face with what actually matters. The point isn't that we should avoid joy, but that we shouldn't avoid the hard truths that mourning reveals. By letting ourselves feel the weight of loss and mortality, we learn to live more wisely, more gratefully, and perhaps more gently with others who are suffering.
