What does Ecclesiastes 5:20 mean?
When life gets overwhelming, dwelling endlessly on our struggles can pull us under. This verse suggests that when God fills our hearts with genuine joy, we find a kind of mercy: we're simply too occupied with the good things right in front of us to be consumed by regret or anxiety about everything we've lost or done wrong. This isn't about denial or pretending hard things didn't happen. It's about the freedom that comes when joy becomes big enough in our lives that it takes up the space worry and self-recrimination used to occupy. The Teacher (the voice in Ecclesiastes) is pointing to something we've probably all experienced: when you're genuinely engaged and grateful for what's in your hands, you're not stuck replaying all your failures on repeat.
