“For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.”
What does Ecclesiastes 2:26 mean?
God rewards those who genuinely seek him with the deep gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and genuine joy that nothing else can provide. Meanwhile, those who chase only their own desires find themselves trapped in exhausting work, constantly gathering and striving, only to end up passing their wealth to someone else. The writer is pointing out the irony and emptiness of this cycle, suggesting that all the frantic accumulation we do apart from God leaves us hollow, even if we succeed on the surface. What matters isn't what we can grab and hold, but the peace and clarity that comes from living in harmony with God.
