“Who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all of my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.”
What does Ecclesiastes 2:19 mean?
The speaker here is wrestling with something that hits many of us: you work hard, build something meaningful, and then it all passes to someone else, possibly someone who won't appreciate or steward it well. There's no guarantee your child or heir will be wise or even competent, yet they'll inherit everything you've worked for anyway. This captures a real anxiety about legacy and control. No matter how carefully you've lived or how much you've achieved, you can't ultimately determine what happens to your life's work after you're gone. The author calls this "vanity" not because work itself is pointless, but because we often chase it with the false hope that our efforts will create lasting meaning we can guarantee or control.
