Ecclesiastes 2:18
βI hated all my labor in which I labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes after me.β
What does Ecclesiastes 2:18 mean?
The writer of Ecclesiastes is wrestling with something that haunts many of us: the futility of working hard to build something we can't take with us. He's describing that sinking feeling when you realize all your effort, success, and accumulation will eventually pass to someone else, possibly someone who won't appreciate it or will squander it. This isn't really about hating work itself, but about the despair that comes when we make our meaning depend entirely on what we produce or own in this life. It's an honest cry from someone who chased achievement and comfort as if they were ultimate goals, only to realize they leave an empty feeling. The passage invites us to consider whether our real satisfaction comes from things we can lose, or from something deeper that doesn't depend on what we leave behind.
