Deuteronomy 9:4
“Don’t say in your heart, after Yahweh your God has thrust them out from before you, saying, “For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land”; because Yahweh drives them out before you because of the wickedness of these nations.”
What does Deuteronomy 9:4 mean?
Moses is warning the Israelites not to pat themselves on the back and claim they deserve the land because they're so righteous. The truth is messier than that: God is giving them the land partly because the nations already there have become deeply corrupt, not because Israel has earned it through moral superiority. This matters because it's easy to confuse God's provision with personal merit. The Israelites were being given a genuine gift rooted in God's ancient promises to Abraham, but taking that gift didn't make them better people. In fact, Moses is setting up an important theme: their tendency to forget God and turn away would be their real problem. The challenge wasn't whether they deserved the land, but whether they could stay faithful once they had it.
