Deuteronomy 9:18
“I fell down before Yahweh, as at the first, forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water, because of all your sin which you sinned, in doing that which was evil in Yahweh’s sight, to provoke him to anger.”
What does Deuteronomy 9:18 mean?
Moses is describing his desperate intercession for Israel after they worshipped the golden calf, one of their greatest failures as God's people. He's telling them that he literally fasted for forty days and nights, completely abstaining from food and water, as he pleaded with God not to destroy them for their sin. The number forty often signals a period of serious testing or transformation in Scripture, and Moses' willingness to suffer alongside his people shows the depth of his concern for them. He's not recounting this to boast but to help Israel understand how seriously God takes rebellion, and how costly it was to bridge the gap between their sin and God's mercy.
