“I took hold of the two tablets, and threw them out of my two hands, and broke them before your eyes.”
What does Deuteronomy 9:17 mean?
Moses is describing the moment his anger overwhelmed him when he came down from Mount Sinai and saw the Israelites worshipping a golden calf instead of waiting for God's instructions. He had just received the tablets with God's Ten Commandments written by God's own finger, yet the people had already abandoned their covenant with God. His throwing and breaking the tablets was both an expression of his rage at their betrayal and a physical manifestation that they had already shattered their agreement with the Lord before the ink was even dry. It's a stark image of how quickly faith can crumble, and how even the most sacred things can be destroyed when people turn away from God.
