Deuteronomy 5:27
“Go near, and hear all that Yahweh our God shall say, and tell us all that Yahweh our God tells you; and we will hear it, and do it.””
What does Deuteronomy 5:27 mean?
The Israelites are asking Moses to be their go-between with God, standing at the boundary between the divine presence and the people. They've just experienced God's voice directly at Mount Sinai and it terrified them, so they're asking Moses to listen on their behalf and bring back the message. What's touching here is their commitment in the second part: they promise to listen to whatever Moses reports and actually do it, not just hear it and forget. This moment reveals something real about how we sometimes approach faith. We might want someone else to do the hard spiritual work for us, or we might be afraid to face God directly. But notice that even through Moses as a messenger, the people still have to choose to listen and act. There's no real shortcut to following God, even when someone we trust brings us the message. The work of paying attention and responding is always ours to do.
