“that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:”
What does Deuteronomy 4:42 mean?
In ancient Israel, if someone accidentally killed another person, they could run to a designated city of refuge and be protected from the victim's family members who might seek revenge. This verse describes that protection: a person who caused someone's death without intending to (and without any history of conflict with them) could find safety there and continue living. The law recognized an important difference between murder and manslaughter, offering mercy to those whose actions were truly accidental rather than born from hatred or malice. For many people today, this speaks to God's understanding that we sometimes cause harm unintentionally, and that there is a place of refuge and grace even when we've caused real damage.
