“Is this the way you repay Yahweh, foolish and unwise people? Isn’t he your father who has bought you? He has made you and established you.”
What does Deuteronomy 32:6 mean?
When Moses sings this song to Israel, he's calling them out for forgetting where they came from. The nation had turned to other gods and broken their covenant with God, and Moses wants them to feel the weight of their ingratitude: How could you repay your own Father this way? The language of being "bought" and "made and established" points to God's rescue of Israel from slavery in Egypt and his care for them in the wilderness. Moses is reminding people that relationship with God isn't transactional, but deeply personal, like a parent's bond with their children. The sharp question "Is this the way?" carries real pain, the kind a parent feels when they've sacrificed everything and their child acts as though none of it mattered. This can speak to our own moments of forgetfulness, when we drift from gratitude into patterns that distance us from God. It's not meant to shame you into obedience, but to invite you back to remembering: who you belong to, and how you came to belong to them.
