Deuteronomy 3:20
“until Yahweh gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also possess the land which Yahweh your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then you shall each return to his own possession, which I have given you.””
What does Deuteronomy 3:20 mean?
Moses is speaking to the tribes of Reuben and Gad, who had asked to settle on the east side of the Jordan River rather than crossing into Canaan with the other Israelites. He's telling them they can have their desired land, but first their soldiers must help the other tribes conquer and settle the territory west of the Jordan. Only after their brothers have found security and peace in their own lands can these warriors return home to their families and property. This captures something deeply human about community: sometimes our personal desires have to wait for the common good, and there's an expectation that we share the burden of getting others to safety. It's not punishment but responsibility, a reminder that freedom and rest for one group often depends on the faithfulness of another.
