“But your wives, and your little ones, and your livestock, (I know that you have much livestock), shall live in your cities which I have given you,”
What does Deuteronomy 3:19 mean?
Moses is giving practical instructions to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh, who had just requested to settle east of the Jordan River instead of crossing over with everyone else. He's telling them that their families and animals can stay safely in their new settlements while the men go fight alongside the other Israelites to claim the promised land. There's something tender in Moses acknowledging their concern, almost as if he's reassuring worried families that their loved ones won't be abandoned. This verse reminds us that God makes room for different circumstances and seasons in life, and that sometimes faithfulness means letting people contribute in different ways while still being part of the larger community's calling.
