Deuteronomy 29:4
“But Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day.”
What does Deuteronomy 29:4 mean?
This statement comes as Moses reflects on forty years of wilderness wandering, and it's harder than it sounds at first. Moses is saying that despite witnessing God's miracles directly, the people still haven't truly understood who God is or what He's asking of them. He's not blaming them for failing to pay attention, but rather pointing out that genuine spiritual understanding is something God opens up in us, not something we achieve through effort alone. The verse lands differently depending on where you are. If you're struggling to feel God's presence or make sense of faith, it can feel discouraging, like understanding is out of reach. But read in context, Moses is actually calling the people to wake up and ask God to transform their hearts right now, in this moment. It's an invitation, not a dismissal. The hardness of heart that prevented them from seeing God's work is something they can bring to Him and ask Him to change.
