Deuteronomy 29:1
“These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.”
What does Deuteronomy 29:1 mean?
Moses is gathering the Israelites in Moab, just before they enter the promised land, to renew God's covenant with them. This moment matters because the people who originally received the law at Mount Horeb (Sinai) have mostly died during the wilderness journey, so a new generation needs to hear and accept these terms for themselves. It's not that God is changing the agreement or making something entirely different, but rather inviting each generation to say "yes" to the relationship on their own, with full understanding of what it means to belong to God. This speaks to something real in faith life: knowing God's promises secondhand isn't the same as claiming them yourself.
