Deuteronomy 28:63
“It will happen that as Yahweh rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so Yahweh will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you. You will be plucked from the land that you are going in to possess.”
What does Deuteronomy 28:63 mean?
This is one of the hardest passages in Scripture, part of Moses' warning about what happens when God's people persistently turn away from him. The passage uses a painful contrast: the same intensity of God's attention that brought blessing will turn toward judgment if Israel abandons their covenant relationship with him. It's not that God changes his character, but that the consequences of rejecting him are as real and thorough as the consequences of following him. The threat of being "plucked" from the promised land was meant to be taken seriously during Israel's wilderness journey, and it eventually did come to pass through exile. But even this passage sits within a larger story where God never completely abandons his people.
