Deuteronomy 24:12
“If he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge.”
What does Deuteronomy 24:12 mean?
When someone who's struggling financially offers you something of theirs as a guarantee for a loan, you're being told not to keep it overnight. The idea is that if a poor person gives you their cloak or another essential item as collateral, they might need it back that same day for warmth or basic survival, so holding onto it while they sleep would cause them real hardship. This law reflects God's concern for the vulnerable, acknowledging that rules about contracts should bend when someone's dignity or basic needs are at stake. It's less about the technicality of an agreement and more about remembering that behind every transaction is a person whose wellbeing matters.
