Deuteronomy 2:8
“So we passed by from our brothers the children of Esau, who dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah from Elath and from Ezion Geber. We turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab.”
What does Deuteronomy 2:8 mean?
The Israelites are traveling through the desert toward the promised land, and this verse describes how they respectfully navigated around the territory of Edom, whose people were descendants of Esau (Jacob's brother). Rather than forcing their way through, they took a longer route around Edom's land, honoring the fact that God had given that region to Esau's descendants as their own inheritance. It's a quiet example of restraint and respect, even when the Israelites had God's promise of blessing and a large population that could have overpowered their neighbors. Sometimes walking the harder path is the more faithful choice.
