Deuteronomy 2:19
“When you come near the border of the children of Ammon, don’t bother them, nor contend with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.””
What does Deuteronomy 2:19 mean?
As the Israelites traveled toward the promised land, God drew clear boundaries around which peoples they should avoid fighting. The Ammonites, descendants of Lot (Abraham's nephew), had their own territory that God had already assigned to them, and Israel was instructed to pass by peacefully rather than seize it. This wasn't about the Ammonites being righteous or deserving, but about God's sovereign plan for different nations and lands. There's something deeply human here: the natural impulse to take what we want or what lies in our path, and the discipline required to respect others' boundaries even when we have the power to cross them.
