Deuteronomy 19:6
“Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue the man slayer while his heart is hot and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him mortally; even though he was not worthy of death, because he didn’t hate him in time past.”
What does Deuteronomy 19:6 mean?
This verse is part of ancient Israel's system of refuge cities, where someone who killed another person by accident could flee for safety. The law recognizes that grief and rage can cloud judgment: when someone's loved one dies, even if by accident, the grieving family member (the "avenger of blood") might pursue and kill the responsible person in hot anger, without stopping to consider whether it was truly murder or a tragic mistake. By providing these cities of refuge, the law creates space for truth to emerge and justice to be measured rather than reactive. It acknowledges something deeply human: that our most painful moments can drive us to act in ways we might regret, which is why systems of justice need to slow things down and ask harder questions. The verse essentially says that without this safety measure, innocent blood would be shed in the name of vengeance. This speaks to something that still resonates today: when we're hurting deeply, we need structures and people around us that help us think clearly rather than act on raw emotion alone.
