Deuteronomy 18:18
“I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you. I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him.”
What does Deuteronomy 18:18 mean?
God is promising Moses that he won't leave his people without guidance after Moses is gone. Instead of one leader, there will be a continuing line of prophets who speak God's words faithfully to the community. Each prophet will be an ordinary person (not someone foreign or separate) who carries the weight of delivering God's message exactly as given, without adding or changing it. Many Jewish readers understood this as pointing toward a succession of prophets throughout Israel's history. Christians have traditionally seen it as ultimately pointing to Jesus, who perfectly embodied God's word and spoke with complete authority. Either way, the promise offers comfort: God doesn't abandon people, but keeps communicating with them through trustworthy messengers who speak his truth, not their own opinions.
