Deuteronomy 18:16
“This is according to all that you desired of Yahweh your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, “Let me not hear again Yahweh my God’s voice, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I not die.””
What does Deuteronomy 18:16 mean?
When God gave the law at Mount Horeb, the experience was overwhelming. Thunder, fire, and a voice so powerful that the people trembled and begged Moses to be their go-between instead of hearing directly from God themselves. They were terrified, convinced that encountering God's presence so directly would kill them. Moses is reminding the Israelites that their own fear led them to ask for prophets to speak God's word to them. Rather than seeing this as weakness, God honored that request and established a system where prophets would communicate His messages. It's a compassionate moment, actually, showing that God understands human limitations and works within them rather than crushing us with His overwhelming power.
