Deuteronomy 18:14
“For these nations that you shall dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery and to diviners; but as for you, Yahweh your God has not allowed you so to do.”
What does Deuteronomy 18:14 mean?
The Israelites were about to enter a land where the existing cultures relied heavily on magic, fortune-telling, and attempts to contact the spiritual realm outside of God's guidance. God was drawing a clear boundary: this is not the way his people would seek answers or make decisions. Instead of turning to sorcerers or diviners, the Israelites were meant to trust God directly through prayer, the teaching of priests and prophets, and obedience to his law. The underlying message is about where we place our confidence when life feels uncertain—will we pursue guidance through means that claim secret knowledge, or will we turn to God with honesty and faith?
